The borders of Western Europe during WW1 and into present time has changed drastically. You can find these changes in two countries, Germany and Austria-Hungary which is now considered just Austria. During WW1 Germany's and Austria-Hungary's government type was a monarchy. Germany's monarch was Wilhelm II and Austria-Hungary's was Emperor Franz Joseph which both had full power of their countries. This shows that they can say something that they want the country to do and they'll do it without questioning his authority. Showing how big both countries are because they either wanted to invade or buy countries, places, companies to increase their borders. Now in present Western Europe, Germany's and Austria's borders decreased gradually. The other countries in Western Europe only have had either a small change or no change at all.
